Pest Identification:
- Adults are nocturnal, remain hidden during day time in feeding / breeding sites.
- Adult Rhinoceros beetles are large black beetles with a distinctive horn and with delicate red-orange hairs on their underside.
- Males and females vary in body size (up to 40 mm) and the female horn tends to be shorter.
- The horns can also vary in size among individual beetles depending on larval growing environments.
- Males and females can also be distinguished by the underside of their body Males have a smooth, polished tip of the abdomen.
- Females have a clump of rigid red hairs at the tip of the abdomen.
- CRB males do not live as long as females.
- Adult males live for approximately 5 months.
- Females live for around 9 months. The female will mate with several males and will produce 3-4 clutches of 30-50 eggs.
Damage:
- Adult beetle bores through unopened spindle leaves and spathes
- Collar regions of young seedlings are bored by the beetle
- The pest on an average causes 10% loss in production of nuts
- The beetles damage palms by boring into the centre of the crown, injuring the young growing tissues and feed on the exuded sap.
- As they bore into the crown, they cut through the developing leaves. When the leaves grow out and unfold, the damage appears as V-shaped cuts in the fronds or holes through the midrib.
Control Measures:
- GLPS nanomatrix technology to monitor and control of Rhinoceros beetles is very effective over existing commercial lures as it has extended field efficacy with a lower load of pheromone.
- This technology is developed jointly by Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre of Advanced Scientific Research .
- Trapping of Rhinoceros beetles using GLPS RB-Lure(aggregation pheromone lures) in food baited (such as dates or sugarcane) GLPS Bucket trap forms an important component of management strategy.
- GLPS Bucket trap with GLPS RHINO-Lure@ 1-2 per hectar
